MEMBERSHIP OF PSTI

        BENEFITS

        "...research, technology, information and networking for the upstream petroleum industry..."

        The Petroleum Science and Technology Institute (PSTI) is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to improving the profitability of its Members' businesses through new technology applications.

        Who will benefit from Membership?

        Full corporate Membership of PSTI will benefit:

        • Exploration and production companies who recognise the importance of research and emerging technology to the pursuit of business objectives in the UK and internationally;

        • Companies in the petroleum-related manufacturing, service and supply sector who recognise the importance of innovation to the health of their business;

        • Government agencies and others dedicated to the efficient and effective exploitation of hydrocarbon resources through the use of new knowledge and technology.
        Applications for Membership are invited from these organisations.

        PSTI also offers membership to small and medium sized companies through its SME Scheme, and to service and supply companies through its Access Membership. Further information on both of these schemes is available from PSTI.

        The PSTI Process

        On behalf of its Members, PSTI works to ensure maximum return on research investments. Based on a knowledge of its Members' research requirements, PSTI is active in the following ways:

        • it invests Membership subscription income in applied research, delivers results to all Members, and promotes transfer of results to application;

        • it invests subscription income in information services for Members;

        • it catalyses, co-ordinates, manages joint industry-funded R&D projects;

        • it establishes technically focused "expert groups" for Members' staff to determine common research requirements and scope for joint action;

        • it disseminates information on emerging science and technology.
        Technical Scope

        PSTI's activities span the disciplines of oil and natural gas exploration and production geoscience and petroleum engineering.

        The Institute is strategically involved in:

        • research agenda setting;

        • research leadership;

        • joint industry project catalysis;

        • technology delivery;

        • knowledge mapping and management.
        Technical Information & Advisory Service

        The Technical Information & Advisory Service has three key elements:-

        • RESEARCH AWARENESS

        • TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER

        • TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE
        Underpinning its activities in research, PSTI invests subscription income in an Information Service for Members to provide the following:

        RESEARCH AWARENESS:- Information on what/where research is being conducted, providing details of key organisations. The accumulation of this knowledge by the Institute results in the production of The International Petroleum Research Directory, which provides details of current/ongoing research activity related to the upstream hydrocarbon industry.

        TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER:- Information and advice on emerging technologies available for exploitation by the industry. The PSTI organises a series of seminars and workshops on an annual basis to facilitate technology transfer into the industry.

        TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE:- Technology advisors available to answer technical queries in more depth. Member companies have access to key PSTI personnel on such matters to a maximum threshold of 4 days per annum. Over and above this, PSTI levy a day rate or part thereof.

        RTD INTELLIGENCE TRACKING & MONITORING:- research, technology and development monitoring service available to individual Member companies. Tailored search profile service indicating an individual member company's information requirements.

        Up to four free separate 'subject' profiles can be monitored as part of PSTI Membership subscription.

        Communication Service

        Interaction with Members takes place at various levels in the PSTI Board of Management, in the Science Advisory Committee, with the various technical interest groupings, and through contacts with a nominated management representative of each Member company.

        The key element of the communications service is the Members' Brief folder. This ring-bound volume contains a series of official communications issued by PSTI and acts as a concise guide to PSTI activities and the PSTI subscription-research portfolio. Regular updates are produced to keep members informed of the latest developments.

        The Institute also circulates a number of Technology Briefs related to the key issues of interest to Members of the Institute's Technical Interest Groups.

        Additional Services

        Conference Awareness - provision of information on conferences relevant to the upstream petroleum industry. and on potential speakers for conference planning.

        Customised Searches and Analysis - A wide range of conventional information services are available for answering specific queries: on-line database searching, literature searching; bibliography compilation; state-of-the-art reviews; advice on accessing information sources related to research, technology and development; provision of selective dissemination of information through maintaining profiles on highly specialised subjects. (More extensive information searches/reviews may be subject to a service charge.)
